Virla Mae Shaffer

January 1, 1926 — June 26, 2021

Virla Mae Shaffer, age 94, of Litchfield, MN died on Saturday, June 26, 2021. A memorial service will be held at Ecumen chapel, 218 N. Holcombe Ave., Litchfield, MN 55355 on Wednesday, June 30, 2021 at 10:00 AM with visitation one hour prior to the service. Virla was born November 10, 1926 in Moulton Township, Murray County, MN, to Earl and Hjordis Jones. Virla's early years were spent on a farm in Pipestone, MN. She grew up with four brothers - Gordon, Wallace, and twin brothers, Don and Duane. She was married to Benny Lee Shaffer for forty-eight (48) years. Together they had four children – Karen, Janet, LuAnn, and Gary. Virla enjoyed many things during her lifetime including shopping, garage sales, spending time with her family, and surprising her children with delicious, home made treats. Our memories are full of the favorite dishes and desserts she prepared (throughout the year) and on special holidays. Virla and her husband, Benny, spent their later years in Las Vegas, and enjoyed entertaining their children and grandchildren whenever they came to visit! Her friends and family will always remember her as someone who understood the ups and downs of life. Her courage and empathy, and especially helping others, inspires them to follow her example. She is survived by her daughter(s), Karen Gross and her husband, Dick, of Traverse City, Michigan; Janet Gudim and her husband, Mike, of Lakeville, MN; LuAnn Sicard and her husband, Paul, of Naples, FL; her son, Gary Shaffer of Litchfield, MN, and 8 grandchildren, Brian, Kim, Shelly, Andy, Grant, Jamie, Jessica, and Justina, and 13 great-grandchildren. We wish to express our deepest gratitude to the incredible staff at Ecumen and Bethany, in Litchfield, MN, for the loving care she received over the past four years. Attendance will be limited due to Covid-19. Masks will be required and your temperature will be taken at the door. The family will proceed to the inurnment at Ripley Cemetery immediately following the service and there will be no luncheon.
