Vincent “Vince” J. Caron, age 70, of Litchfield, MN, died on Thursday, August 6, 2009 at the Emmanuel Nursing Home in Litchfield, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at the Church of St. Philip in Litchfield with Father Joseph Steinbeisser as Celebrant. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 PM on Tuesday at the Church of St. Philip in Litchfield, MN with a prayer service at 7:30 PM. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Litchfield, MN.
Vincent Joseph Caron, the son of Emil and Lucile (Boutain) Caron, was born on October 24, 1938 at the family farm in rural Marshall, Minnesota. He attended school in Marshall, graduating from Central Catholic High School in 1957. On October 10, 1961, he was united in marriage to Ruth Lanners in St. Leo, Minnesota. He was drafted into the Army in November 1961 and served at Fort Hood, Texas. He was honorably discharged from the Army November 20, 1963. At age 15 he started working at a grocery store in Marshall, MN. This was the beginning of his career in the grocery business. Over the years he worked for Fairway, Red Owl, Nash Finch, More 4, Gateway and SuperValu. He was affiliated with Red Owl for 28 years. In 1965 his young family moved to Litchfield, MN. He worked at Andy’s Red Owl for 9 years before purchasing 1/2 interest in the store. In 1984 he had full ownership of the store.
Vince was a member of the Church of St. Philip and the Knights of Columbus, serving as Grand Knight from 1982 to 1984. He was a charter member of the Rotary Club and served as president from 1992-1993. He was a member of the Catholic Aid Association, the Litchfield Jaycees, the Litchfield Chamber of Commerce and the Nelsan-Horton American Legion Post #104. He served on the Watercade Board for a number of years and was Commadore in 1972. He was on the Litchfield Community Theatre Board for 22 years. Most recently he was a board member of the Meeker County Historical Society. He enjoyed traveling, camping, and gardening. He especially enjoyed time with his grandchildren.
Vince is survived by his daughters Margaret Caron (and Michael Mucci) of Hudson, Wisconsin and Mary (and Patrick) Hansen of Darwin, MN. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren Shawn, Rosanne, Rebecca, Jessica, Philip and Margo Hansen; 4 sisters Juli Caron, CSJ of Fargo, North Dakota, Carol (and Jim) Driemeyer of Minneota, MN, Betty (and Bob) Cummings of Frazee, MN and Monica (and Dave) DeSmet of Minneota; one brother Ed (and Betty) Caron of Elephant Butte, New Mexico; sister-in-law Diane Caron of Marshall, MN. He is preceded in death by his wife Ruth; children Joseph, Jude, Marcella, Jerald and Jerome; parents Emil and Lucile; a brother Donald and a sister Marie Ann.
