Verrol E. Smith, age 83, of Grove City, died on Monday, October 6, 2008 at the Meeker Memorial Hospital in Litchfield, MN. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Saturday, October 11, 2008, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grove City, MN with Pastor Jean Smith officiating. Visitation will be held Friday, October 10 from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grove City, MN and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the Burr Oak Cemetery in Union Grove Township, MN with Military Honors by the Litchfield Military Honor Guard. Verrol Eugene Smith, the son of Cecil H. and Myrtle G. (Flanders) Smith, was born on September 9, 1925, in Union Grove Township, Meeker County, MN. He received his education at School District 20. He entered the United States Marine Corps in 1945. Verrol was united in marriage with Joyce Johnson on March 16, 1947 at First Lutheran Church in Grove City, MN. He bought the family farm in Grove City, where he farmed, drove trucks and shelled corn with his sons. He also worked in New London at the grain elevator and later worked for the Meeker County Highway Department. Verrol also had a sharpening and small engine repair service. He was a member of the Crow River Methodist Church, Trinity Lutheran Church, the American Legion, the V.F.W., and the Farmers Union. He was an active member of his community, where he served on the Grove City Community Homes Board, the Burr Oak Cemetery Board and the Union Grove Township Board. Verrol enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, gardening and spending time with his family. Verrol is survived by his wife Joyce, 7 sons Bruce (and Beverly) Smith of Houston, TX, Dale (and Barbara) Smith of Sacramento, CA, Wade Smith of Orlando, FL, Kent (and Diane) Smith of Atwater, MN, Dean (and Cheryl) Smith of Grove City, MN, Todd (and Goldie) Smith of Grove City, MN and Scott Smith of Chaska, MN; 14 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Cecil and Myrtle; and sisters Phyllis and Shirley.
