Vern Arthur Masteller

Vern A. Masteller, age 88, of Litchfield died on Friday, November 22, 2013, at the Meeker Memorial Hospital in Litchfield. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, November 25, 2013, at the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Litchfield. Visitation will be on Sunday from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM at the church and will continue one hour prior to the services. Interment will be in the Lake Ripley Cemetery. Vern Arthur Masteller, the son of George and Martha (Bugner) Masteller, was born on September 19, 1925, in Mansfield, SD. He grew up in the Aberdeen area and moved with his family to the Clearwater, MN area where he attended and graduated from the Monticello High School in 1943. He farmed with his family in the Clearwater area after high school. On June 14, 1945, he was married to Ruth Hickman in Hasty, MN. They continued farming in that area before moving to Forest City in 1962 where they continued to farm for four more years. He was an active member of St. Matthew's United Church of Christ. In 1964, Vern took a job with the Thulien Brothers helping to build the Litchfield High School. In 1966, he began working for the school district as the Supervisor of Building and Grounds until he retired in 1987. Ruth died in 1990. On December 12, 1992, he was married to Regina Hed. They lived in Litchfield; six years on Lake Ripley. He became a confirmed member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Vern was active in the community and volunteered as a bus driver for Augustana. He also enjoyed driving school bus to sporting events and as a substitute driver. Vern was a longtime member of the Litchfield Kiwanis Club and the Owls. He enjoyed traveling and was a member of the Happy Ramblers Camping Club. He and Regina traveled to Europe, Hawaii and all over the Continental US. They wintered in the Southern US for nearly ten years. Vern was very talented with a scroll saw. His family has appreciated receiving many of his scroll saw gifts. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and going to coffee with friends. He is survived by his wife Regina Masteller of Litchfield; children, Marilyn (George) Meline of Litchfield, Phyllis (Archie) Holtz of St. Cloud, Lola (Michael) Hendrickson of Lakeville, Steven (Sharon) Masteller of Minnetonka, Charlotte (Richard) Sullivan of Glencoe, Marvin (Cindy ) Masteller of Buffalo, Laura Smude of Maple Grove; step-children Randy (Marilyn) Hed of Dassel, Diane (Mark) Nicholson of Litchfield and Cindy (Jim) Salfer of Dassel. He is also survived by 24 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren 2 great-great grandchildren, brother Herbert (Phyllis) Masteller of St. Cloud and sister Arlys Gamble of Maple Grove.
