Terry W. McFarland, age 64, of Litchfield, died on Thursday, February 11, 2010 at his home in Litchfield after a 13 month fight against pancreatic cancer. Hundreds of friends and family took this journey with Terry and let him know how much he was loved. His strength and positive attitude through his life and in the past year have been an inspiration to many. A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 PM Sunday, March 14, 2010 at the Litchfield V.F.W., 915 East Highway 12, Litchfield, MN with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will be held in Lake Ripley Cemetery, Litchfield, MN.
Terry Wayne McFarland was born on May 24, 1945 in Austin, MN as Terry Pappas, he changed his name to Terry McFarland in 1984. He received his education in Austin, MN, graduating from the Austin High School in 1963. He continued his education at the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1972. He was united in marriage to Cathy Mahowald in Minneapolis, MN on February 18, 1981. Terry retired from Target in 2004 after 21 years in Transportation Planning and has lived in Litchfield since 2007. He had a passion for many things; one of his favorites was Gopher Women’s Basketball where he served as the president of the Fast Break Club for 7 years. He enjoyed traveling with his wife Cathy; they visited 49 of the 50 states together and have taken 11 trips across the Atlantic and 2 across the Pacific. Terry was an avid reader, an excellent writer and enjoyed studying history. He lived this life with compassion and humor; and left his mark in the world by being a great leader and friend.
Terry is survived by his wife Cathy of Litchfield; a son Jefferson (and Karin) Pappas of Crystal, MN; 3 grandchildren Noah, Jonah and Luke Pappas all of Crystal, MN; his mother Eileen Pappas of Milwaukee, Wi; and a sister Barbara (and Gary) Herdegen of Milwaukee, Wi. He is preceded in death by his father Mel Pappas.
In Lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials are given to the “Terry McFarland and Cathy Mahowald Endowed Scholarship” at the University of Minnesota Foundation.
