Ruby M. Holste

Ruby Marie Arica (Holtz) ( Marquardt) Holste was born May 23, 1920 in Harvey Township, Meeker County, Minnesota to Paul and Bertha (Henkelman) Holtz. She was the oldest of seven children. Ruby married Emil Marquardt September 23, 1939 on the twentieth wedding anniversary of her parents. After Emil Marquardt’s death, Ruby married Emil Holste on September 25, 1982. Ruby attended a one room school house in Forest City through eighth grade. She shared memories of standing around the wood stove while her parents taught her English when she was about six years old. Her favorite school subject was History. One of her favorite school memories was when she dressed up as a German girl and wore wooden shoes and 'clomped' around the room. When asked what advice she would give to young folks, she said, “Get your education.”. Ruby worked for 25 years at a turkey processing plant in Litchfield where she had many close friendships. She retired in 1982. At age 42, Ruby surprised Emil with passing her driver's permit test. He had no idea she had been studying for it and said he was happy as well. One of the highlights of her life was a trip to Germany where she enjoyed wonderful scenery, old building architecture, and of course, the food. She was extremely proud of her community. Her homes were great gathering places for family events over the years. Cooking and baking were mom's passion. She also enjoyed playing cards, music, dancing, and the Ladies Aid at her church. Mom always enjoyed being with people. While at Meeker Manor, many staff members shared with us how they liked helping Ruby as she smiled a lot and was content even as her health declined. Ruby is survived by her children Leonard Marquardt (Patricia), Diane Beilke (Leonard), Ralph Marquardt (Amy) and step-children Joanne Holste (Marvin) and Robert and Maxine (Holste) Wilson, many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother Maynard Holtz (Shirley), sister-in-law and husband Caroline McCann (Charles), sister-in-Iaws Donna Holtz (Howard) and Luella Marquardt (Ed) and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
