Roland D. Scharmer, age 80, of Litchfield, died on Thursday, March 19, 2009 at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. Memorial service will be held on Monday, March 23, 2009 at 10:30 AM at First Lutheran Church in Litchfield with Pastor David Sorensen officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 4:00 until 7:00 PM at First Lutheran Church and will continue one hour prior to the services at the church. Interment will be in Lake Ripley Cemetery in Litchfield.
Roland Donald Scharmer was born on January 27, 1929 in Waconia, Minnesota the son of Theodore and Ottelia (Rudloff) Scharmer. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waconia. He grew up and received his education in Waconia. Roland graduated from Waconia High School and continued his education at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1950. Roland was drafted into the service and served from 1951 until 1953 in the United States Army. He was united in marriage to Lorraine Sjolinder on January 24, 1953 in St. Paul, Minnesota. Roland continued his education at University of Northern Colorado, receiving his Masters Degree in 1954. In 1954, Roland and Lorraine made their home in Litchfield. He taught in the Litchfield Public Schools from 1954 until 1986. Roland also worked part time as a crop insurance adjuster from 1963 until 2000. He was an active member of First Lutheran Church and the Litchfield Lions Club. Roland was a passionate follower of Litchfield High School sports, and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. He also enjoyed traveling and spending time fishing. Roland especially enjoyed the time spent with his family.
Roland is survived by his wife, Lorraine of Litchfield, children, Mark (and Meg) Scharmer of Lakeville, Neal (and Kathy) Scharmer of Cedar Rapids, IA, Karen (and Mike) Hendrickson of Albert Lea and Paul (and Amanda) Scharmer of Covington, LA, eight grandchildren; John and Lauren Scharmer, Christina and Alexandra Scharmer, Katelyn and Tyler Hendrickson and Laura and Daniel Scharmer. He is also survived by a sister-in-law Irene Scharmer of Hutchinson and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Elmer and Ruben, and sister Elizabeth. Memorials to First Lutheran Church are preferred in lieu of flowers.
