Richard E. Birkemeyer

Richard E. Birkemeyer, age 80, of Litchfield, MN died on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at his home. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, April 25, 2014 at the First Lutheran Church in Litchfield with a visitation being held one hour prior to the service. Interment will be held in Lake Ripley Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the Litchfield Military Honor Guard. Richard Edward Birkemeyer, the son of Edward and Millie Birkemeyer, was born on March 13, 1934 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was baptized on May 23, 1934 and confirmed his Christian faith on June 18, 1950. Following graduation from Litchfield High School class of 1952, he worked with his father in the family business. May 1, 1953, he married Doris Jean Hillmeyer. Richard spent 2 years in the military, serving his country in France and Germany. Upon his return, he obtained his master plumbers license and opened Birkemeyer Plumbing and Heating that he ran for a number of years. After leaving the plumbing business he operated a gravel business for 5 years. Before retiring he spent 11 years working in sales at Economy Gas Company. Richard was a member of First Lutheran Church where he served on the church council and served as head usher for some time. He also held membership in the American Legion, the Masonic Lodge, the Litchfield Shrine Club and was a Charter member of the Eagles Club. Memories that brought him joy were 60 plus years with his wife Doris, his family & friends, a good days work, a great golf score, a clean car, a walk around the neighborhood and winters in Arizona. Richard is survived by his wife Doris, sons Kurt (Bridget) Birkemeyer of Litchfield, Kim Birkmeyer of Litchfield, Kyle Birkemeyer of Sauk Rapids, and Kris Birkemeyer of Sauk Rapids; grandson William, and granddaughters Hannah, Melanie, and Rebecca.
