Mary Jean Sommerfeld

Mary Jean Sommerfeld, age 90, of Eden Valley, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 25, 2025 at Meeker Manor. She was born to the late Raymond and Mabel (Platt) Caswell.

A memorial service will be held at 11am on Saturday, March 1, 2025 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Litchfield. Family will greet friends from 10am-11am at the church prior to the service. Mary will be laid to rest at Manannah Cemetery at a later date.

Mary grew up on the John Brandt Farm near Forest City, and attended Litchfield High School. She then moved to Minneapolis, where she worked for Honeywell. She married Charles Sommerfeld on January 15, 1955 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where they have been members ever since. They moved to the Sommerfeld Farm in 1956 where they raised their family and spent many happy years.

Mary was a member of the Manannah Sno-Blazers Snowmobile Club. She also enjoyed birdwatching, fishing, camping, bowling, dancing, 4-wheeling, bingo, playing cards and visiting casinos.

Mary is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, Charles; children, Debbie Sommerfeld (Jim Otte), Robin Lalonde, Bill Sommerfeld, and Chuck Sommerfeld (Jeannine); grandchildren, Laura Stussy, Michelle LaLonde (Denny), Taylor Sommerfeld (Jon), and Taryn Sommerfeld (Joey); 6 great grandchildren, Liam, Quinn, Bridger, Asa, Evelyn, and Eli; and sisters-in-law, Ramona (Gordon) Neuman and Wanda Urdahl. She also leaves behind numerous nieces, and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mary is preceded in death by her infant daughter; brothers, Raymond, Mark, Robert, and Richard Caswell; sisters, Lois Satka, Margaret Krambert, Cheryl Almgren; and son-in-law, Fred Lalonde.
