Marvin R. Hackbarth, age 87, of Cosmos, died on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at the Birchwood Hospice House in Hutchinson, Minnesota. Funeral service will be held on Friday, July 3, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Peace Lutheran Church in Cosmos with Pastor Paulus Pilgrim officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Johnson-Hagglund Funeral Home in Litchfield and continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be held in the church cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Cosmos American Legion Post #126 and the Litchfield Military Honor Guard.
Marvin Rhinehart Hackbarth, the son of Emil and Betsy (Larson) Hackbarth, was born on August 2, 1921 in Cosmos, Minnesota. Marvin grew up and attended elementary school in Cosmos and graduated from Litchfield High School. Marvin enlisted and served in the United States Army following graduation. He served in Africa, Italy and other parts of Europe during World War II. Upon his return he joined his father at the family’s International Harvester Implement Dealership, eventually taking over the business.
On May 10, 1946, Marvin was united in marriage to Della Wolter at the Brookfield parsonage. This union was blessed with three children Gene, Rebecca and James. They made their home in Cosmos and later lived on Lake Minnie Belle. Marvin enjoyed spending his winters in Lake Worth, Florida, but cherished his return to Cosmos to be around family and friends.
He was very giving of his time and energy to various community organizations, serving on the hospital board and school board. Marvin was a 60 year member of the American Legion Post #126 in Cosmos.
Marvin had a keen observation and appreciation of nature. He had a passion for the outdoors and spent time fishing, hunting and golfing with family and friends.
Marvin is survived by his children, Rebecca (and Gary) Moehnke of Burnsville and James (and Shirley) Hackbarth of Cosmos, grandchildren, Scott Moehnke (and fiancée Hayley Kruse), Bryan Hackbarth, Leslie (and Jake) Degner, Jason (and Bridget) Hackbarth-Koornneef and family, great grandchildren, Hayley Hackbarth, Jaden Hackbarth and Gage Degner. Marvin is also survived by his special friend Luella Nelson of Cosmos, her children, Linda (and Richard) Martin and family and Dale (and Samitra) Nelson and family. Marvin is survived by his brother Eldon (and Mary) Hackbarth of Uruguay and sister Mildred (and Lorrie) Werner of Cosmos, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Della, son Gene, sister Eleanor Meder and niece Lynn Werner.
Memorials to Peace Lutheran Church and Birchwood Hospice House are preferred in lieu of flowers.
