Marshall N. Madsen, age 94, of Litchfield died on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at the Meeker Memorial Hospital in Litchfield. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, March 12, 2018 at the First Presbyterian Church in Litchfield. Visitation will be from 12:30 until the time of service at the church. Interment will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery at a later date.
Marshall Nelson Madsen was born on October 20, 1923. He was the youngest of the four children of C.O. and Julia Madsen who lived to adulthood - Helen, Woodrow, and Karen. Marshall graduated from Mankato High School. As a young man he worked in the railroad yard in Wilmar. Marshall was married to the former Dorothy Florence Hanscom. He was commissioned to serve in the Navy during World War II. However, following an injury during basic training, resigned the commission and enlisted in the Army. He was stationed on Okinawa. Marshall was recalled to active duty during the Korean conflict and served in postings in the continental United States as well as on Puerto Rico. Following his military service, Marshall enrolled in the University of Minnesota under the GI Bill. Upon his graduation he was employed by the Pure Oil Company. When Pure Oil was acquired by the Unocal Company, he was transferred to Birmingham, AL in 1967 and then to Atlanta, GA in 1972. At the time of his retirement in 1985 he was audit manager for the eastern United States, covering a territory from New York to the Gulf Coast of Texas. In 1991, the Madsens moved to Litchfield. They joined the First Presbyterian Church of Litchfield. Marshall was an elder in the PCUSA and led an adult Sunday School class each week. He enjoyed gardening, making wine, and baking bread.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy Madsen of Litchfield, daughter, Amy Sullivan, and her husband Kevin of Atlanta, GA, son Bob and his wife Linda of Andalusia, AL, as well as cousins and several nieces, nephews and their families. Memorials to the First Presbyterian Church in Litchfield are preferred.
