Leo A. Marquardt, age 91, of Litchfield died on Friday, May 27, 2011 at Ecumen of Litchfield. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at the St. Matthew's United Church of Christ in Forest City with Pastor Jeanne Bringgold-Pro officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Tuesday, May 31st, at the Johnson-Hagglund Funeral Home in Litchfield and will resume one hour prior to the services at the church. Military Honors will be provided by the Litchfield Military Honor Guard.
Leo August Marquardt, the son of Henry and Emma (Schultz) Marquardt, was born on November 18, 1919 in Harvey Township, Minnesota. He grew up in Meeker County and graduated from Litchfield High School in 1937. Leo worked as a farmhand for Walt Kuehl after graduating. He entered the US Army and served during WWII. After his service he returned to Litchfield. He was united in marriage to Flossy Castle at St. Matthew's in Forest City. Leo worked as a carpenter for JF Anderson and continued after it became Ideal Lumber. Leo eventually ventured out on his own and was a self employed carpenter for about 7 years before he retired. In retirement he looked forward to fishing and playing cards. He was a member of the St. Matthew's United Church of Christ and a life member of the VFW. Leo loved the outdoors and enjoyed deer hunting and especially fishing. He also enjoyed playing cards and bowling.
He is survived by his son, Bruce Marquardt of Coon Rapids, step-children, Lloyd ""Buster"" (and Sharon) Berryman of Arizona, Leanna Sanchez of Sioux City, Iowa, eight grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Julius ""Bud"" (and Ruth) Marquardt of Litchfield, sisters, Bertha Holtz of Litchfield, Caroline (and Chuck) McCann of St. Paul, sisters-in-law, Ruby Holste of Litchfield and Luella Marquardt of Litchfield. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Flossy in 2001, brothers, Edwin and Emil Marquardt, sisters, Alina Lorensen and Erna Putnam.
