Lena Larson

Magaldena 'Lena' A. Larson, age 94, of Litchfield, died on Saturday, January 1, 2011, in Litchfield, MN at Ecumen of Litchfield, Emmanuel Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 14, 2011 at St. John's Catholic Church in Darwin, MN. A Rosary will be held at 10:40 AM with a visitation at 10:00 AM at the church on Friday. Interment will be held in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Darwin, MN. Magdalena (Lena) Angela Schummer was born Aug 8, 1916 on a farm north of New England, North Dakota. Her parents were Jacob Schummer and Katherine Rettinger Schummer. She was the youngest of 6 children. After her father and sister, Katherine died in the flu epidemic of 1918 the family moved to New England where she attended the public school and then St Mary's Catholic School. She graduated from St. Mary's in 1935. In about 1938 she moved to Watertown, SD where she lived until 2007 when she moved to Litchfield, MN. While in Watertown she spent most of her years working for the Haan family in their State Farm Insurance Agency. She worked for three different generations. In 1941 she married Walter W. Larson and they continued to live in Watertown. For several years Walt and Lena traveled with the Happy Bill Band throughout the Dakotas. After she retired in 1981 Lena enjoyed being at home and caring for Walt. She and Walt enjoyed family and friends and for many years all the holiday gatherings were at Walt and Lena's. They loved their dogs and for many years always had one to keep them company. After moving to Litchfield the loves of her life were the family boxers. Although she loved them all, Pearl seemed to be her favorite. She always looked forward to their visit at the nursing home. After Walt died in 1989 Lena took up a new hobby: Sunday afternoons at the casino near Watertown. After moving to Litchfield she insisted on her occasional trips to the casino but was never as lucky in MN as she was in SD. Lena lived at the Bethany Assisted Living Home since the spring of 2008 and was very content in her new surroundings. She loved all the girls that cared for her at Bethany and more recently, Gloria Dei. Lena is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Katie, her brothers, Matt and Andy, and her sisters, Katherine, Theresa, and Mary.
