Laverne M. Schultz, age 94, of Litchfield, MN, died on Monday, June 27, 2011 at Ecumen Emmanuel Home in Litchfield, MN. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at the Litchfield United Methodist Church with Pastor Bill Kerr officiating. Visitation will be from 12:30 PM until the 2:00 PM service at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be held in Lake Ripley Cemetery, Litchfield, MN. Memorials may be directed to the Litchfield UMC, Emmanuel Home or the Alison Durfey Memorial Scholarship at Hamline University, MS-C1940, 1536 Hewitt Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55104. Laverne Maxine (Constant) Schultz was born August 31, 1916, in Jamestown, ND to Walter and Emma (Lindberg) Constant. She was baptized in the Presbyterian church in Jamestown and confirmed in the Arndahl Lutheran Church, Grove City. Laverne attended rural school through the 8th grade and graduated from Grove City High School in 1934. She then completed her teacher training in Litchfield and taught in the Cosmos rural school for four years. Thirty years later, Laverne renewed her teaching certificate and taught in a Meeker County rural school for three years. On September 24, 1939, Laverne and Dean Schultz were married at Arndahl Lutheran Church. They made their home in Litchfield and were blessed with two children, Judith Louise and Walter Dean. During World War II, while husband Dean was in the Army, Laverne continued as agency manager for the Minneapolis Star and Tribune. Many young people have said years later that their first job was delivering papers with Dean and Laverne as their ""boss."" Active in the Litchfield United Methodist Church for many years, Laverne had been a Sunday School teacher and a member and officer of the United Methodist Women. Over the years, Laverne prepared many roasted turkeys and buckets of coleslaw for the annual turkey dinner at the church. Laverne was a member of the Eastern Star, the Litchfield Women's Club, and the American Legion Auxiliary for 64 years. Laverne had been a member of Eastern Star for 67 years She had served as Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star, as President of the Litchfield American Legion Auxiliary and as District President of the American Legion Auxiliary. Following Dean's retirement in 1977 as Post Master at Litchfield, they spent 15 winters traveling through the southern and western states. In 1997, they sold their home on Armstrong Avenue and moved into the Emmaus Place Apartments. Dean passed away in 2006, and Laverne remained at the apartment until her health issues forced her to move first to Bethany and then Emmanuel Home, where she had been a resident for two years. Laverne Schultz is survived by her daughter, Judith Durfey of St. Paul, MN and son, Walter (and Judi) Schultz of Plymouth, MN; granddaughters, Emily (and Aaron) Gascho and Hollie Mae Schultz; and two great grandsons, Dresden and Gavin Gascho. Also surviving are brothers Robert (and Dora) Constant of La Habra, CA, and Herbert (and Mae) Constant of Danville, CA; sister-in-law, Marguerite Schultz of San Pedro, CA; and cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
