Kenneth D. Bergren

Kenneth D. Bergren, age 85, of Litchfield died at his home on Tuesday, February 22, 2011. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, February 28, 2011 at All Saints Lutheran Church in Darwin with Pastor Joe Midthun officiating. Visitation will be held from 1:00 - 4:00 PM on Sunday, February 27, 2011 at Johnson-Hagglund Funeral Home, Litchfield, MN and will continue one hour prior to the service at church on Monday. Interment will be held at All Saints Lutheran Cemetery, Darwin, MN with Military Honors by the Litchfield Military Honor Guard. Kenneth David Bergren, the son of Johan G. and Signe (Hansen) Bergren was born on May 24, 1925 in Minneapolis, MN. His mother died when Ken was only two and he was raised by his older sisters and an aunt. He worked on a farm at an early age to help support himself and his family. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the US Navy and served in the Pacific Theater on a Destroyer Escort. After his discharge, he returned to Minneapolis, MN and worked for Northern States Power at the Riverside Plant in Brooklyn Center. He was united in marriage to Janice Melhus in Minneapolis, MN on January 10, 1948. He worked as a relay technician for 37 years and ended his career, retiring from Monticello Nuclear as station electrician after seven years. He built a home on Lake Stella in Darwin, MN and wintered in Weslaco, TX for 15 years, and in 1999 moved into Litchfield. He was a member of All Saints Lutheran Church in Darwin, MN, the Litchfield V.F.W., the Meeker County Navy Club, and the U.S. Navy Club. Ken was an honorary graduate from Litchfield High School in 2004. Ken will be remembered as a skilled handyman whose traits were passed on to his family. He enjoyed spending time with his family, taking family vacations, and going on ice cream outings. He also enjoyed Walleye fishing, golfing and bowling. He is survived by his wife, Janice of Litchfield, MN; children, Barb Bednarz of Gold Canyon, AZ, Dianne George of Montrose, MN, Nancy (and Ron) Elam of Buffalo, MN, Gary (and Carla) Bergren of Pine River, MN; grandchildren, Kenny Robinson, Becky Robinson, Janice Dahlen, Caroline Felix, Tara Van Heel, Jason George, Chad George, Lane George, Joshua George, Christina Cox, Nathan Elam, Alissa Piram, Gregory Bergren, Derek Bergren and Maggie Bergren; and 20 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Johan and Signe; son David; grandson Michael Bergren; sisters Elaine Mauer and Joyce Coldren; and son-in-law Roger Bednarz.
