John E. Sommerfeld, age 75 of Litchfield, MN died on Friday December 7, 2018 at the Meeker Memorial Hospital in Litchfield. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, December 14, 2018 at First Lutheran Church in Litchfield. Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 8:00 PM on Thursday at the Johnson-Hagglund Funeral and Cremation Service and will continue one hour prior to the service on Friday. Interment will be in the Ripley Cemetery in Litchfield. John Emanuel Sommerfeld, the son of Gerhardt and Eva (Filbrandt) Sommerfeld was born on January 21, 1943 in Litchfield, MN. He graduated from Litchfield High School in 1961 and was united in marriage to Joan Seaman on February 15, 1964 at the Peace Lutheran Church in Cosmos, MN. John was a farmer and over the years he was the president of his chapter and vice president of the state of Minnesota FFA, worked at Custom Products, sold Vermeer Balers, active in the Litchfield fire department, dug basements, water and sewer lines. He did custom farming for many of his neighbors, he also built and welded on his own equipment. He was a member of First Lutheran Church. He was a hard and dedicated worker, whenever someone needed help he was always there for them. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, and he loved spending time with his family and many friends. John is survived by his wife Joan of Litchfield, MN; children James Sommerfeld of Litchfield and Michelle (Michael) Ward of Litchfield, MN; grandchildren Jessica (Brent) Wayne, Stephanie (Rafael Jimenez Jr.) Sommerfeld, Samantha (Tanner) Eberling, Johnathan Sommerfeld, Tyler Sommerfeld, Emily Sommerfeld and Ashley (Joshua) Kellner; great grandchildren Israel and Amora Jimenez; and Nora Wayne; sister Ruth (Paul) Manning of St. Paul, MN; and brother David (Joan) Sommerfeld of Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his parents Gerhardt and Eva; sons Bob Sommerfeld and Tom Sommerfeld; brother Karl Sommerfeld; and sister MaryAnn Hanson.
