Herman H. Ulrich

Herman H. Ulrich, age 91, of rural Darwin, MN died on Friday, June 10, 2016 in Hutchinson, MN. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday June 17, 2016 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Litchfield. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the Lake Ripley Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the Litchfield Military Honor Guard. Herman Henry Ulrich, the son of Henry and Emily (Grady) Ulrich was born on June 17, 1924 in McLeod County, MN. He graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1942. He loved his country and showed that by his service in the U.S. Army, where he served in the Philippines Campaign during WWII, earning two bronze stars. Following his honorable discharge, Herman worked in construction in Guam with his brother Harvey until moving to Hutchinson where he worked for Kraft Foods. On October 6, 1949, he was united in marriage to Esther Hoefs at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Litchfield, MN. They moved to a farm north of Cosmos where he was a dairy and crop farmer. During this time Herman also was a foreman, working at the Woolen Mills in Litchfield. In 1985 they moved to rural Darwin, where he continued farming. Herman was a deep man of faith and was a former member of Peace Lutheran Church in Cosmos where he was superintendent of Sunday School and after moving to rural Darwin he became a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Litchfield, MN. He was also a life member of the V.F.W. Herman enjoyed time with his family and had a special twinkle in his eye when seeing his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, reading, taking pictures, traveling, going to auctions and playing cards and cribbage. He was an excellent cook and played the squeezebox and harmonica. He is survived by his children Carol (Larry) Piepenburg of Litchfield, MN, Bonnie (Ron) Lupfer of Litchfield, MN, Karen (Scott) Peterson of Atwater, MN, Steve (Deborah) Ulrich of Hutchinson, MN, Julie (John) Haugen of Andover, MN, Gregory (Donna) Ulrich of Stewart, MN and Jeff (Bev) Ulrich of Cologne, MN; 16 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Emily; wife Esther; grandchildren Michelle Ulrich and Gretta Haugen and 6 siblings.
