Grace E. Hasse, age 81, of Litchfield, MN, died at home, on Sunday, April 15, 2012. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at St. John Lutheran Church, 19903 56th Avenue, NE., rural Atwater, MN. Visitation will be held one hour before the service at church. Grace Ellen Hasse, the daughter of William and Ethel (Addison) Thompson, was born on May 16, 1930 in Essig, MN. She grew up with her sisters Virginia, Margaret and Mary and brother Woody. Growing up, Grace walked a mile to get to Country School in Essig through the 8th grade and graduated from High School in Sleepy Eye, MN in 1948. As a child, Grace walked 3 miles a day delivering newspapers in Essig for 10 years. She also fixed hair every Saturday for nine ladies, at 25 cents each. Grace was united in marriage to Melvin Martin Hasse on July 13, 1948 in Plainview, MN. Together they had five daughters, Rebecca, Gwen, Penny, Terry and Carmen. Grace was a housewife until she started working at 3M in New Ulm, MN for 24 1/2 years. She enjoyed sewing, crossword puzzles and gardening. She loved her first morning cup of coffee, putting puzzles together, dancing with her husband, hanging the clothes out to dry and helping on the farm. Grace kept track of seasonal events on her calendar and looked forward to seeing the first hummingbird of the spring. She will be remembered for her talents of cooking, canning and baking, including her bread, fried fish, pies, chocolate cake and the homemade wine that she made. Grace is survived by her children; Rebecca Peterson of Elbow Lake, MN, Gwen Hasse of Litchfield, MN, Penny Hasse of Litchfield, MN, Terry (and Robert) Grathwohl of New Ulm, MN and Carmen (and Denny) Walser of New Ulm, MN; 14 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; sister Margaret Hazzard of Illinois and Texas; brother-in-law Wally Pehling of Dassel, MN. She will be deeply missed by her daughters, family, friends and her cat, Kitty. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Ethel; husband Melvin; sisters, Virginia and Mary, and her brother Woody.Previous Events
