Florence L. Smith

Florence L. Smith, age 88, of Litchfield, MN, died Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at the Meeker Memorial Hospital in Litchfield. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, December 29, 2016, at the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Litchfield. Visitation will be from 5:00 - 7:00 PM on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at the Johnson-Hagglund Funeral Home and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be held at Lake Ripley Cemetery, Litchfield, MN. Florence Leone Smith, the daughter of Othmar and Theresa (Bayerl) Krueger was born on May 12, 1928 in Winsted, MN. She was baptized at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted and graduated from Winsted High School in 1946. After high school she was a bookkeeper for the Litchfield Produce. She was united in marriage to Lewis Smith on May 10, 1952 at Peace Lutheran Church in Hutchinson, MN. She entered the Lutheran Church after marriage and became a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church where she was active in the Ladies Aide and the Vespers Guild. She was also a member of the Greenleaf Extension Club. Florence and Lewis farmed together and she was the picture farm wife. She milked cows, raised chickens and had large gardens as well as helping with other farm duties. She enjoyed traveling, dancing, mowing lawn and attending to her flower and vegetable gardens and making canned goods. Florence was a detailed bookkeeper and a hard worker. She would often take care of her grandchildren on their sick days and enjoyed taking trips to the casino, where her biggest win was a new pick-up that she won while playing a quarter machine on her first spin. She is survived by her children, Nancy and Doug Piepenburg & Jayne and Mark Holmgren. Grandchildren, Kelly and Jerry Block, Jr & Jeremy Smith and Sarah Madsen, Erin Piepenburg & Justin and Kourtney Piepenburg, Ashley and Brandon Welker; Ryan Holmgren and Alyssa Bertram (fiance'). Great grandchildren Evan, Nora and Brenna Block and Jaxson and Sawyer Piepenburg, Isla Welker and many nieces, nephews & other relatives and friends.
