Florence Genevieve Schlender

Florence G. Schlender passed away on Monday, August 3, 2015 in Ely, Minnesota at the age of 98. A funeral service will be held at the United Methodist Church in Litchfield, MN on Friday, August 7, 2015, at 11:00 AM with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be held in the Lake Ripley Cemetery. Florence Genevieve Schlender was born on January 27, 1917 in Collinwood Township, Meeker County, Minnesota. She was the daughter of Axel and Daisy (Servin) Mattson. She was baptized at the Lake Jennie Covenant Church and later confirmed at the First Lutheran Church of Cosmos. On September 18, 1940 Florence was united in marriage to Leonard Schlender in Excelsior, MN. This marriage was blessed with two children, Dale and Sharon. They lived in Corvuso, MN where Leonard was the operator of the Corvuso Creamery until 1965. At that time they moved to Florence's family farm north of Corvuso and resided there until Leonard's death in January, 1994. Florence moved to Hutchinson and lived there until the age of 87 when she moved to Ely, MN to be near her daughter Sharon and family. Florence was a kind, soft spoken person who loved her family and friends. She was a homemaker who loved cooking, gardening, reading, crossword puzzles and the Minnesota Twins. We will miss her gentle, loving spirit. Florence is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Mark) Luthens; daughter-in-law, Janet Schlender; sister, Helen Madden; grandchildren, Pamela (Mark) Palm, Barbara (Tim Nordgaard) Schlender, Brady (Devon) Luthens, Andrew (Kate) Luthens; great grandchildren, Tori Palm, Luke Palm, Lucy Luthens, Clara Luthens and Jack Luthens. Florence was preceded in death by her parents, Axel and Daisy Mattson; husband, Leonard Schlender; son, Dale Schlender; brother, Lloyd Mattson and his wife Norma; sister, Eleanor Gierke and husband Herman and brother-in-law Jim Madden.
