Eva I. Sommerfeld, age 93, of Litchfield, MN, died on Saturday, July 3, 2010 at the Cokato Manor in Cokato, MN. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Litchfield with Pastor Paul Lindhorst officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be in the Lake Ripley Cemetery, Litchfield, MN.
Eva Irma Katy Sommerfeld was born on April 7, 1917 to Frank and Ida (Schmidt) Fielbrandt in Schiefelbein, Germany. She was baptized in Germany. At the age of 7 she immigrated to the United States, through New York, where her name is recorded on Ellis Island. From there she moved to Hutchinson, MN where her sponsored family lived. She was confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in Hutchinson. She received her education in Hutchinson, MN, graduating in 1934. On June 2, 1935 she was united in marriage to Gerhardt Sommerfeld in rural Litchfield, MN in the farm house. Eva lived in Hutchinson for 11 years, on the farm southwest of Litchfield for 32 years, in Litchfield for many years and the last few years in the Cokato Manor. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and being a housewife, where she helped daily on the farm. She sewed all of her kids clothes while they were in grade school. Eva was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School for many years and was a member of the Ladies Aid. Eva was part of a group of parents who helped plan and cook the meals for School District 68. When School District 68 closed, Eva along with all of the parents formed the District 68 Jolly Chipmunks where she arranged bus tours to various Minnesota destinations.
She is survived by her daughter Ruth (and Paul) Manning of St. Paul, MN and sons John (and Joan) Sommerfeld of Litchfield, MN and David (and Joan) Sommerfeld of Bloomer, Wisconsin. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; a great great grandson and many other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband Gerhardt; son Karl; daughter MaryAnn; grandsons Tom, Bob and Donn II; and granddaughter Cindy Lou.
