Ervin Smith

Ervin B. Smith, age 89, of Litchfield died on Thursday, August 26, 2010 at the Watkins Hilltop Care Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, September 3, 2010 at the Church of St. Philip in Litchfield with Father Joseph Steinbeisser celebrating. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Litchfield with military honors by the Litchfield Military Honor Guard. Ervin Bernard Smith, the son of Martin and Theresa Tholl was born on March 13, 1921 in Cold Spring, Minnesota. He grew up and received his education in Kimball, graduating in 1940. Ervin enlisted in the United States Naval Service in 1942 serving during World War II in the South Pacific until 1946. He was united in marriage to Maxine Anderson on June 25, 1946 at the Church of St. Philip. They made their home north of Forest City where he engaged in farming with his dad. Ervin worked as a boiler operator for a power plant for many years while he continued to farm until the mid 90's. He was a member of the VFW and the Last Mans Club. Ervin loved to spend time outdoors fishing, hunting and in his flower gardens. During his younger years he enjoyed playing fast pitch softball where he was an outstanding player on local teams. Ervin is survived his children; Judy Smith (Jan Woodcock) of Portland, OR, Tom (Shirley) Smith of Litchfield, Ervin ""Bud"" Smith Jr. of Hutchinson, Kathie Smith (Kevin Burns) of Minneapolis and Dan (Carla) Smith of Hutchinson, 6 grandchildren; Stacie (Brian) Jones, Zachary (Patty) Smith, Hannah (Jerod) Barrick, Tyler Smith (ZarieVonder Haar) Nicole Smith, Miah Smith, 4 great grandchildren; Ellery, Calvin, Maizy and Breck. He is also survived by his sisters, Jeanette Anderson and Geraldine Rangeloff. Ervin was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Maxine and brothers Erhart ""Babe"" Smith and Glenn Smith.
