Elizabeth M. Bergstrom, age 88, of Grove City, MN, died on Saturday, January 2, 2010, at the Emmanuel Nursing Home in Litchfield, MN. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 PM Thursday, January 7, 2010 at the First Baptist Church, Grove City, MN with Pastor Peter Lee officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:30—7:30 PM on Wednesday at Johnson-Hagglund Funeral Home in Litchfield, MN and will continue one hour prior to the service at church on Thursday. Interment will be in the First Baptist Cemetery, Grove City, MN.
Elizabeth Mae “Bette” (Miller) Bergstrom was born on October 2, 1921 to Alfred and Judith (Martin) Miller in Grove City, MN. Bette was baptized at the age of 10 on December 6, 1931. She graduated from Grove City High School in 1939, then attended St. Cloud Teachers College. Bette worked at First State Bank in Grove City, and then at the Census Bureau in Washington, D.C. during World War II. After the war, she worked at Commodity Credit in Minneapolis and at Veteran’s Affairs at the University of Minnesota. She married Oliver Bergstrom on June 10, 1950 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Atwater, MN. Oliver and Bette farmed in Swede Grove Township (north of Grove City), but spent 3 summers in the 1950s working in Alaska. Oliver died in 1993. Bette built a home on Green Lake in 1994 and moved to her childhood home in Grove City in 2001 and to Emmanuel Home in Litchfield in 2008. Bette was a life-long member of First Baptist Church in Grove City where she served on various committees, taught Sunday school and was involved in Women’s Ministries. She was also a member of the Litchfield Writers Group, Atwater Book Club and Grove City Women’s Club.
Bette is survived by her 3 children Philip (and Robin) Bergstrom of Raymond, MN, Julianne (and Walter) Johnson of Grove City and Timothy Bergstrom of Grove City; 6 grandchildren Whitney (and Richard) Greiffenstein of Miami, FL, Kelsey (and Alexandru) Leaghi of Los Angeles, CA, Haakon Johnson of Bozeman, MT, and Alyssa, Adrianna and Annika Bergstrom, all of Raymond, MN; sisters-in-law Gladys Bergstrom of Litchfield, Dolores Bergstrom of Grove City, Audrey Bergstrom of Cosmos and Eleanor Bargloff of South Dakota; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Alfred (and Gerri) Bergstrom of Anchorage, AK. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband; son Daniel, parents, siblings Evelyn, George, Virginia, Winston and Robert Miller; brothers-in-law Howard, Paul, Theodore, Harold and Eugene Bergstrom; and sisters-in-law Clara Bergstrom Straight, Elvera Bergstrom Haines, Eleanor Bergstrom Adams, Helen Shelp Miller and Elayne Wilson Miller.
