Douglas E. Hess, age 93 of Litchfield, MN died on Saturday January 5, 2019 at the Meeker Manor Rehabilitation Center in Litchfield, MN. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at First Lutheran Church in Litchfield. Visitation will be held from 5 - 7 PM on Tuesday January 8 at Johnson-Hagglund Funeral and Cremation Service and will continue one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Interment will be held in Ripley Cemetery, Litchfield, MN. Military Honors will be provided by the Litchfield Military Honor Guard. Memorials are preferred to the First Lutheran Church. Douglas Eldon Hess, the son of Jake and Hilda (Anderson) Hess was born on April 11, 1925 in Dassel Township, Meeker County, MN and grew up in Strout, MN. He was baptized on October 25, 1925 at Stockholm Lutheran Church in Cokato and confirmed on November 20, 1938 at Beckville Lutheran Church. He graduated from Litchfield High School in 1942. After high school, he worked on a farm before entering the Navy where he served during WWII from 1944 until 1946. Doug was united in marriage to Mary Ann Manning on May 10, 1947 at First Lutheran Church. He did carpentry work with his father until he began working with the postal service, where he was a clerk and later delivered mail on rural routes for many years. Doug was a member of First Lutheran Church and enjoyed farming, carpentry, gardening and hunting. He is survived by his sons Craig (Kandace) Hess of Maplewood, MN and Gary (Terri) Hess of St. Cloud, MN; grandchildren Shannon Hess (Yakout Hussein), Erika (Ryan) Billiet, Megann (Guthrie) Kellom, Michael (Lena) Hess and Jenna Hess; 8 great grandchildren; and brothers Donald (Becky) Hess of Mankato, MN and Clifford (Jeanyne) Hess of Baxter, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents Jake and Hilda; wife Mary Ann; sisters Adeline Pearson and Marjorie Pearson; nephew Keith Pearson; and daughter-in-law Suzanne Hess.
