Daniel A. Dougherty

Daniel A. Dougherty, age 93, of Litchfield died on September 29, 2010 at the Emmanuel Nursing Home in Litchfield, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, October 5, 2010, at the Church of St. Philip in Litchfield, MN, with Father Joseph Steinbeisser officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at church. Interment will be held at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Litchfield, MN. Military honors will be provided by the Litchfield Military Honor Guard. Memorials preferred to the Church of St. Philip School or donors choice. Daniel Alonzo Dougherty was born on November 13, 1916 in Kenmare, ND to Edward and Lyla (McKeen) Dougherty. He received his education and graduated from Marshall High School in Minneapolis, MN in 1937. He was united in marriage to Helen Nyhammer on September 5, 1942 in Berkley, CA. In 1948 they moved to Wayzata, MN and to Litchfield, MN in 1991. Dan has been a resident at Emmanuel Nursing Home for the past 6 years. He spent his working career as a painter and decorator and saddened many when he retired in his 70's. He was proud of his heritage and of the fact that his family were early settlers in Meeker County. He served in the Army during WWII. Dan was a member of Church of St. Philip, Painters Union, the American Legion for over 50 years and the Knights of Columbus in Wayzata, MN where he was a Grand Knight. He also volunteered at the Emmanuel Home in Litchfield for over 12 years and was an active member and usher at St. Bartholomew's in Wayzata. He enjoyed refinishing furniture, traveling, (enjoying his trip to Ireland), reading, watching football (especially Notre Dame) and spending time with friends and family. He will be remembered for his ability to tell a good joke, for being a father figure to many who knew him and for his love of children and babies. He loved his wife, children, grandkids and great grandkids to the end. He will be missed by family and friends. Daniel is survived by his wife Helen of 68 years, children; Kathleen (Jack) Dayon of Huntley, IL, Dan (and Mary) Dougherty of Litchfield, MN and Polly Money of Litchfield, MN, 8 grandchildren; Sarah Ober, Amy (and Josh) McCall, Steve (and Laurie) Dayon, Bob (and Maria) Dougherty, Misty (and Danny) Hayward, Becky (Chris Hassett) Money, Nick Money and Ashly (Zach) Clark; 18 great grandchildren; Tristan Ober, Seamus Ober, Kathleen Ober, Norah Ober, Galvin McCall, Dayon McCall, Caroline Dayon, Owen Dayon, Cole Dougherty, Meaghan Dougherty, Jessica Hayward, J.T. Hayward, Jordan Hayward, Jaymee Hayward, Makenzy Hassett, Natalie Hassett, Amy Nicole Kovall and Lucas Clark; sisters; Jean (Bud) Enge of New Hope, MN, Mary Lou Funk of Edina, MN, Elizabeth Aune of Hastings, MN and Eileen Bell of Moreno Valley, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother; Edward Dougherty, sister; Margie Markson; two infant children; and two grandchildren Josette and Kelly Dougherty.
