Bertha R. A. Holtz

Bertha R. A. Holtz, age 90, of Litchfield, MN, died on Sunday, August 24, 2014 at the Ecumen Emmanuel Home in Litchfield, MN. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday August 30, 2014 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Litchfield, MN. Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 8:00 PM on Friday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church and will continue one hour prior to the service at church. Interment will be held at Lake Ripley Cemetery. Bertha Rosella Augusta Holtz, the daughter of Henry and Emma (Schultz) Marquardt, was born in Harvey Township, MN. She attended District 5 Country School and graduated from Litchfield High School in 1941. Bertha continued her education, attending teachers normal school and taught country school for 5 years. She was united in marriage to Vernon Holtz at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Litchfield, MN on October 2, 1947. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church where she was the church secretary, Sunday School Superintendent for 27 years, and active in the Calvary Circle, Ladies Aid and Bible Class. Bertha and Vernon loved to host big family gatherings in their home where card nights were especially fun for them. Bertha was a kind and gentle lady who always made time for what she believed was important, including being an outstanding blood donor and making her church calendar a priority in her life. Bertha loved spending time with her family and friends and taking care of her flowers and apple trees. She enjoyed gardening, canning, baking, cooking, quilting, reading, playing cards and traveling. Bertha is survived by her son Philip (and Sylvia) Holtz of Cottage Grove, MN; 3 grandchildren, Jennifer (and Robert) Blomberg of Cottage Grove, MN, Jonathan (and Jamie) Holtz of Cottage Grove, MN, and Jeffrey (and Colleen) Holtz of St. Paul, MN; 6 great grandchildren, Benjamin, Joshua, Lucy, Emmi, Charlie and Cameron; sister Caroline (and Charles) McCann of Wisconsin; sisters-in-law, Luella Marquardt and Ruby Holste; brothers-in-law Howard (Donna) Holtz of Litchfield, MN and Maynard (Shirley) Holtz of Hutchinson, MN; and many nieces, nephews and extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Vernon; infant son Vincent; siblings, Emil, Edwin, Alina Lorensen, Erna Putnam; Leo and Julius.
