Barbara Jean Birong

Barbara J. Birong, age 78, died on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at the Annandale Care Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at the Church of Our Lady in Manannah with Monsignor Francis Garvey celebrating. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 19th from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the Johnson-Hagglund Funeral Home with a parish prayer service and rosary at 6:30PM. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the services at the church. Interment will be in the church cemetery in Manannah. Barbara Jean Birong, the daughter of Frank and Loretta (Koob) McKenny, was born on December 9, 1932 in Minneapolis. She grew up and received her education in Wayzata, graduating from Wayzata High School in 1950. On April 4, 1958, she was united in marriage to Arthur Birong at St. Bart's in Wayzata. They lived in Wayzata until 1973, when they moved to Grove City. Barbara worked at the Eden Valley-Watkins School as a cook and teachers aid. She was a member of the Church of Our Lady in Manannah. She also belonged to the St. Louis Park Garden Club when she lived in Wayzata. Barbara enjoyed flower gardening, knitting, painting, bird watching and especially spending time visiting with family and friends. Surviving Barbara are her husband, Arthur Birong of Grove City son, Dave (and Karen) Birong of Oakdale, daughter, Sue Hanowski (and Fiancé Chris Kummrow) of Elk River, 3 grandchildren, Devin, Zach and Stephanie Hanowski. She is also survived by her sister Shirla (and Tom) Miller of Anchorage, many nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.
