Alice L. Hellwig

Alice L. Hellwig, age 94 of Litchfield, MN, died on Wednesday November 27, 2024 at Bethany Memory Care in Litchfield, MN. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday December 12, 2024 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, in Litchfield, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at church. Interment will be held at Ellsworth Cemetery at a later date. 

Alice Lorraine Hellwig, the daughter of Herman and CeCelia (Sommerfeld) Lohse was born on February 18, 1930 in Litchfield, MN. She was baptized on March 23, 1930 and confirmed on June 20, 1942 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Litchfield. Alice attended country school until she was 14 years old. On her birthday in 1949, she was engaged to Willie Hellwig; son of Bill and Elsie Hellwig. Alice and Willie were married at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on June 22, 1949; where they walked down the aisle together. They were both faithful members of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Ellsworth Township, Darwin, MN. Until 1976 they made their living on a dairy farm where they raised their five children. Alice helped milk cows, do farm chores and sewed clothes for her family. She had a large vegetable garden of which she canned and preserved; along with many flower gardens. Before retiring, she was employed at the JC Penny store, the Golf Club Restaurant and Nystrom’s Truck Stop in Litchfield. From 1976 to 1986 Willie and Alice spent their summers on Lake Washington and their winters in Arizona and Texas. Willie played the accordion and Alice played the drums for many dances of their peers in Texas. After the death of her husband in July 1987, she eventually made Lake Washington her year round home. During this time she started writing poems and stories. She also created greeting cards, painted and drew flowers. Alice had three dogs that she adored; Tippie, Muffins and Ribbons. In May of 1996, Alice moved to Crosby, MN and built a log home in Pine River, MN in September 2000. In her later years; Alice lived in the Litchfield Trailer Court, Dassel Assisted Living and moved to Bethany Memory Care in 2017 where she peacefully passed away at the age of 94.

Alice is survived by her five children Becky (David) Taylor of Coon Rapids, MN, Steve (Wendy) Hellwig of Litchfield, MN, Nancy Everson of Lewiston, MN, Mary Ahlgren of Darwin, MN and Donn (Shelly) Hellwig of Princeton, MN; grandchildren Stacey (Thad) Harnois, Jacob Taylor, Michael (Courtney) Taylor, Kristian (Tom) O’Connor, Heidi (Nathan) Krzmarzick, Corrine (Jody) Riebe, Charity (Manny) Mares, Isaac Everson, Indiana Burt, Heidi (Darrel) Terning, Holly (Paul) Niedzielski, Heather (Aaron) Hobert, Rick (Sarah) Ahlgren, Lindsay (Brian) Ashworth, Kayla Nelson and James (Amanda) Kasper; great grandchildren Oscar and Henry Harnois, Morgan Taylor, Avery and Chase Taylor, Kaidden, Breck and Macray O’Conner, Caitlin and Colton Krzmarzick, Aiden Brabbit, Dylan, Dustyn, Dayna, Dessa, Talia and Tate Terning, Emma, Eric and Adam Niedzielski, Austin Hobert, Philip, Matthew, Jacob, Olivia, Henry and Norah Ahlgren, Carter and Rhiannan Ashworth, Lily, Lindsey and William Nelson, Isabella and Briauna Kasper.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband Willie C. Hellwig; grandson Zachery Ahlgren; and son-in-law David Ahlgren.
